What is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is a tetracycline-class antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from producing the proteins they need to grow and multiply. It’s effective against a broad range of bacteria, which is why it’s used for many different infections. Beyond treating infections, it’s also commonly prescribed as a long-term treatment for moderate to severe acne and as a preventive medication against malaria for travellers. Like all antibiotics, it works only against bacterial infections, not viral ones.

How it’s taken
Doxycycline is usually taken once or twice daily, depending on what it’s treating. It should be taken with a full glass of water and while sitting or standing upright (not lying down) to avoid throat irritation, and it can be taken with food to reduce stomach upset. For malaria prevention, it’s started before travel and continued for a period after returning, exactly as your doctor directs. Complete the full course for infections, even if you feel better.
Possible side effects
Common: nausea, stomach upset, and increased sensitivity to sunlight (sunburn more easily).
Less common but serious: severe or watery diarrhoea, difficulty swallowing or throat irritation, allergic reactions. Seek medical help if these occur.
Precautions
Doxycycline makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight — use sun protection, which is especially important in Thailand’s climate. It’s not suitable during pregnancy or for young children. Tell your doctor about any other medications you take (it can interact with several), and about any kidney or liver conditions. As with all antibiotics, use only when genuinely needed to help limit antibiotic resistance.
