Some infections take time to show up on tests. As a rough guide, chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests are reliable from about 2 weeks after exposure, and syphilis and HIV tests from about 6 weeks, with a repeat HIV test at 3 months to be sure. If the exposure was in the last 72 hours, ask us about PEP straight away.
